Cameroun. Thanks to Harambee's support, 33 young girls receive a qualified vocational training.
Sorawell is a centre of professional formation for women. The school has a three year cycle course with a final stage,at the end of which students are qualified as governors in private houses or in hotels or chefs of general cuisine, bakers or cakemakers.
In 2009,thanks to Harambee committment,33 young women were able to attend the course.
"the daily work during the three years of the course is divided into the practical activity in the morning (cooking etc) and that of theory, which includes among other things ,language lessons (indispensable for those who work in hotels)hygiene, dietology, geography, chemistry and mathematics" tells us Gnes Bulekhani Ambenje, teacher at the school. "The activities have a hard rhythm and usually the first months are very hard for the girls. The majority of them have always lived in baracche and struggle to realize the neccessity of the maintenance and cleaning of a house. Machines such as the vacuum cleaner are outside of their experience." And that is why the relationship between the teacher and the students is very close: the girls are followed closely to explain to them the functioning of the instruments, but also to suggest a new attitude towards the care of the house.
Hermine Yumeng Kouam is an ex student and after having attended the three year course she decided to continue with another three of follow up to improve and deepen her education.During the studies at Sorawell She learned cooking ,but also to choose and balance the nutritive qualities of the food.
Her family is very happy about her course of studies: Hermine takes care of them contributing financially to the shopping and also through her attention to hygiene and food even the effects to the health are felt.
Also Hermine confirmed the initial phase was difficult and that she was on the point of abandoning the school during the first month. Then she decided that, from the moment she was offered the possibility of having a quality education,it was worth taking advantage, even overcoming sacrifices. The results are tangible not only from the professional point of view but also on the personal plane. The attention reserved apart from the studies also to formation of the human person have allowed her to develop a sense of being a working person which before she did not have and an attention for the care of herself and people around her.All of this has put her in a place to obtain an advantage be it in the workplace (in terms of good work offers) or the personal plane.
The biggest difficulty to confront at Sorawell are those linked to the keeping of time.Different to all of the other hotel schools in the country, where students assist at a weekly practical demonstration per week, without taking part actively,at Sorawell students are involved everyday in the first person in the activity, something which requires a great commitment but also allows them to work as soon as they finish school.
In her years of deeper study,Hermine has learned how to manage a little capital and some personnel, and now is putting some aside to save to open her own bakery which is her dream.
Sorawell organises other courses apart from those tied to the hotel school. It involves often of activities to give women the possibility of having a certain self sufficiency, putting them in a position to create and manage little private businesses.
In some villages in the outskirts of Yaounde, for example, there have been organized courses of formation for women who work in the post,to teach them to create a micro project of development in their area. However the initial diffidence of the person, who are not accustomed to evaluate the importance of investing in formation, the results have rewarded the efforts. Some of the projects from the course, have in fact won a grant from the government.
